…folktales, artifacts, riddles, and histories
I know that it has been quite a few weeks since I last made a post, and for that, I apologize. These last few weeks have been crazy, hectic, fun, and majorly chaotic. But, I have made it back and will do my best to post something new weekly. I am thinking about doing a series of posts on Doors… they offer such a wide variety of options and opportunities. Doors can be an invitation to something new and exciting, or they can be leading down a much deeper and darker path. Doors can be a bridge that just allows us to pass through, which can signify a beginning or an end to that particular story or journey.
Stories are like doors in so many different ways, they are the bind that connect doors and stories together. What most people don’t think to look for or notice, on a daily basis, is that doors are everywhere if you look close enough! Most people miss the magical flicker of the door because many of us don’t have time (or feel like we have the time) to sit and smell the roses. If there is one thing that I remind myself of every single day, it is that we need to slow down and enjoy the day we get to live, breathe, and dream. As many have said, and will continue to say, tomorrow is NEVER promised. We need to treat today as a gift.
Today’s passage comes from another incredible book! I have pulled close to 10 different passages from this book, and I am sure that over time, I will share them all with you!
”…all stories, even the meanest folktales, matter. They are artifacts and palimpsest, riddles and histories. They are the red threads that we may follow out of the labyrinth. It is my hope that this story is your thread, and at the end of it you find a door.”
Passage from: The Ten Thousand Doors of January
By: Alex E. Harrow
This passage could not be any more true! Stories have all different beginnings and endings, hardships and joys, and it is within the journey of the story that the doors come to life. As I stated above, stories and doors are intertwined, they are the best of friends, and they can be their biggest enemies. As discussed in previous posts, stories can cross a multitude of spectrums that range from happy to sad, incredible to heartbreaking, and horrible to worst. But, the thing that we all need to remember is that we all can choose our path, pick the doors that we open and the doors that we close, and the story that we live to tell. This passage told us that all stories matter. As a matter of fact, that has been the theme of the past 3 blog posts. Stories matter, stories shape who we are as living creatures, and stories can help heal or cause tremendous pain in our everyday lives.
Now, more than ever, stories need to be told, remembered, and taken to heart. There are so many stories that are a part, or at least should be a part, of history and could be considered an artifact. Stories help the past not be repeated, they help others see why empathy and understanding are critical in our everyday lives. I will leave you tonight with this last thought, as we lead into a series about doors. Stories are the journey or adventure, but it is the doors that open or introduce change.
Thank you all!
Love and Hugs,
Sarah Crocker, BSW, MSW
